Lymphedema
as i read through some of my booklets and resources, i came across the condition "Lymphedema". it is a possible side effect of radiation.
i read that i should use lotions on my legs at least once a day and it make me question the relationship between lotion and the condition. there is no relationship between those but there is between the stimulation of rubbing and massaging the legs [in my case] and Lymphedema. lotion just helps ease the rubbing and massaging.
having 19 lymph nodes removed during my surgery means the lymph is not being filtered as it was before. in very unmedical and simple terms, lymph nodes filter infections.
Lymphedema refers to swelling that occurs most often in your arms or legs. It may affect just one arm or leg, but sometimes lymphedema can involve both arms or both legs.
The swelling occurs when a blockage in your lymphatic system prevents the lymph fluid in your arm or leg from draining adequately. As the fluid accumulates, the swelling continues.
No cure for lymphedema exists. But lymphedema can be controlled. Controlling lymphedema involves diligent care of your affected limb.
exercise is important to avoiding Lymphedema.
symptoms of Lymphedema:
1. Swelling of part of your arm or your entire arm or leg, including your fingers or toes
2. A feeling of heaviness or tightness in your arm or leg
3. Restricted range of motion in your arm or leg
4. Aching or discomfort in your arm or leg
5. Recurring infections in your affected limb
6. Hardening and thickening of the skin on your arm or leg
if you have had radiation and/or surgery to remove lymph nodes, it is very important to get or keep active and take care with your limbs to avoid further complications.
what is it they say... and once of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
